Federico Felici and Jonas Buchli, both formerly of Google DeepMind, have founded Fusionality, a Lausanne-based startup building standardised control systems and simulation tools for fusion power companies. The venture responds to a gap in the emerging fusion supply chain: while some firms make reactor components and others manufacture precision parts, few specialise in the hardware and software needed to control the reactors themselves, forcing most fusion companies to build near-identical control systems from scratch.

The company has raised a $3.7 million (CHF 3 million) pre-seed round from Founderful and Playfair and currently employs seven people. Felici argues that around 80% of any fusion company's control system is essentially the same, since the underlying physics is consistent across reactor designs even though the engineering challenge of stabilising superheated plasma is complex. Fusionality is initially targeting magnetic confinement fusion, the approach used by firms such as Commonwealth Fusion Systems, Realta Fusion, Proxima Fusion and Type One Energy, and plans to incorporate AI to enhance rather than fully replace reactor control.
