PS6 Could Be the Last PlayStation Console Designed by Iconic Architect

Push Square · 3 hours ago

Mark Cerny, the veteran system architect behind the PS4 and PS5, has suggested he is nearing the end of his career, raising the prospect that the PS6 could be the last PlayStation console he leads. This matters to PlayStation fans because Cerny has become synonymous with Sony's console reveals, typically fronting detailed technical presentations that set the tone for each new generation, and his eventual departure would mark the end of an era spanning decades of hardware design.

Cerny, 62, made the comments in an interview with Game File, noting he is "not done yet" but acknowledging he is approaching retirement age around the time the PS6 is expected to launch. Given a PS7 would likely arrive seven to eight years later, this makes the PS6 probably his final console as lead architect; he has previously served as system architect for the PS Vita, PS4 and PS5, and worked on titles including Crash Bandicoot, Uncharted and Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. The interview also revealed a new philanthropic venture, the Nova Games Foundation, run with Geoff Keighley, which will give 20 young developers $100,000 grants and mentorship, with potential funding of up to $500,000 for promising projects.
