Nintendo has announced Metroid Ravenous, a new 2D entry in the long-running Metroid series, for its Switch 2 console. The game will launch on 28 January 2027, continuing what has been a notable revival for the franchise in recent years.

Visually and mechanically, Ravenous appears to build on 2021's Metroid Dread, retaining the 2D format while incorporating 3D graphics, cinematic action sequences, enemy parrying, and Samus's signature Morph Ball rolling ability. A new addition sees Samus apparently absorbing energy from enemies to survive, reflected in Nintendo's "eat or be eaten" marketing tagline, while the game also introduces a range of imposing foes, including giant creatures and armed, caped fighters. The announcement follows a strong recent run for the series, which has also seen a Metroid Prime remaster in 2023 and Metroid Prime 4 released last year.
