Google launches real-time NFL game tracking in Search

The Verge ·

Google is rolling out a Live Game Feed feature in Search to provide real-time updates during NFL games, launching alongside the start of the regular season. The tool, activated via a red "Live" icon, brings together game recaps, play-by-play updates, social media commentary, video highlights and AI-generated insights in one place, reflecting Google's push to make Search a more useful companion for live sporting events.

The feature is available now on mobile in English, with support for college football games and additional languages due later this month. Search is also gaining a new mobile carousel for browsing scores across other live matches, alongside enhanced statistics tracking leaders in categories such as passing touchdowns and rushing yards, plus finer detail on sacks, fumbles and yards after catch. Users can also now link their Yahoo Fantasy or Sleeper accounts to Search from today, allowing AI-generated suggestions for fantasy lineup changes without needing to upload screenshots or enter data manually.

In short

  • New mobile carousel and improved player stats also introduced
  • Yahoo Fantasy and Sleeper accounts can now link for AI lineup tips

Explained simply

The NFL is the United States’ top professional American football league, with teams playing a regular season before the playoffs and the Super Bowl. Many fans follow games as they happen, checking scores, key plays and player statistics.

Google Search is a service for finding information online, and it also displays results such as sports scores. The new feature brings live game updates and related material into Search; fantasy football users can link accounts from Yahoo Fantasy or Sleeper to get suggestions about their line-ups.

The change matters because it puts several kinds of game information in one place on mobile phones. It is part of a wider effort by online services to help people follow live events, while the tools available may vary by sport, language and location.
