Apple has given hands-on details of its new iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, confirming a similar design to last year's models but with notable camera upgrades, including a variable-aperture lens on the main camera. The phones, unveiled at Apple Park, retain the aluminium body and screen sizes of the iPhone 17 Pro line but gain colour-matched glass backs and a smaller Dynamic Island capable of displaying three Live Activities at once. The camera system is the headline change, with new manual "pro" controls built into the native camera app, alongside the previously announced photo-authentication feature that digitally signs images to verify they have not been altered.

The variable aperture can be set automatically or fixed at one of four stops—f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 or f/4.0—giving users more control over exposure and depth of field, alongside manual settings for shutter speed, white balance and focus, the latter aided by a focus-peaking display. The devices come in black, silver, "glacier" blue and burgundy, and will be available to preorder from 12 September ahead of a 18 September release. Pricing starts at $1,199 for the iPhone 18 Pro and $1,299 for the iPhone 18 Pro Max, both a $100 increase on their predecessors, with storage options rising to 2TB.

Apple iPhones typically get a design refresh every few years, alternating with smaller updates in between; the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max fall into the latter category, keeping much of the previous model's look while focusing on internal and camera improvements. The "Pro" tier sits at the top of Apple's range, aimed at buyers who want the most advanced hardware, particularly for photography, and usually commands a higher price than the standard iPhone.

A variable, or "adjustable," aperture refers to a camera lens that can physically change how much light it lets in, similar to lenses on dedicated cameras, giving photographers more control over brightness and background blur. This is a feature phone cameras have rarely offered before, so its inclusion marks a shift toward more manual, camera-like control for mobile photography.

The photo-verification feature responds to a broader, ongoing concern about AI-generated and digitally altered images being mistaken for genuine photographs. By digitally signing images at the point of capture, it aims to let people check later whether a photo has been edited, a capability of growing interest to news organisations, courts and social media platforms.
