Apple's first foldable, the iPhone Duo, brings an iPad-like multitasking interface to the iPhone for the first time, allowing owners to run multiple apps simultaneously and take advantage of the device's extra screen space. Shown off during Apple's "surprise and shine" event, the software has been reworked with rearranged sidebars, relocated docks and menus, and app designs that adapt to make the most of the larger inner display, marking a significant shift in how iPhone software is built.

The Duo's 7.6-inch inner screen effectively offers two home screens' worth of space when open, supporting larger widgets and more apps on view, while a Split View feature lets apps run side-by-side and be resized, with content such as photos draggable between them. Apple's own apps gain new tricks too, including dual-camera live feeds during FaceTime calls and child-facing previews in the Camera app, while an upgraded StandBy mode uses the partially folded design to act as a clock, photo frame or weather display. Support for the USB-C Apple Pencil, adding iPad-style markup, drawing and note-taking tools, is expected to follow later this year.
