Paramount Pictures is developing a sequel to 2003's The Italian Job, with Paul Feig in early talks to direct. The original, a remake of the 1969 British classic starring Michael Caine, starred Mark Wahlberg, Charlize Theron and Jason Statham, and has become a cult favourite for its heist plot and iconic Mini Cooper chase sequences; a follow-up has been rumoured for years but never materialised until now.

Development is at an early stage, with Paramount still searching for writers and no cast currently attached. Director F. Gary Gray, who is not confirmed to return, previously said in 2009 that any sequel would need to top the original creatively rather than exist purely for its own sake. The 2003 film followed getaway driver Charlie and his crew as they avenged a betrayal by stealing gold a second time in Los Angeles, using Mini Coopers to outrun pursuers through the city's streets and subway tunnels.
