Carmen Bryan, a former finance officer at Def Jam affiliate Rush Management who shares a child with rapper Nas, has filed a civil lawsuit against fellow rapper N.O.R.E. (Victor James Santiago Jr.), alleging he sexually assaulted her at a Manhattan nightclub in May 1999 during promotion for his album *Melvin Flynt Da Hustler*. The case is significant both for its high-profile figures within the hip-hop industry and for what Bryan's lawyers describe as a wider culture in music and nightlife that has normalised non-consensual contact against women.

The lawsuit, filed on 9 September and obtained by Billboard, claims N.O.R.E. was "visibly intoxicated" when he carried out an act of non-consensual digital penetration despite Bryan's objections, and allegedly apologised afterwards, saying he hadn't recognised her. Bryan says she confided in Jay-Z the next day but chose not to report the assault at the time, later suppressing the trauma until Cassie Ventura's 2023 lawsuit against Sean "Diddy" Combs prompted her to come forward. She is suing under New York City's Gender-Motivated Violence Protection Act, which created a temporary window for such claims otherwise barred by the statute of limitations, seeking unspecified damages for emotional distress. Representatives for N.O.R.E. and Jay-Z, who is not accused of wrongdoing, did not respond to requests for comment.
