Bright Eyes frontman Conor Oberst has announced his debut short film, Invention 13, which features a voiceover from Phoebe Bridgers, his former bandmate in Better Oblivion Community Center. The film, co-directed with Shawn Foree, is set to premiere on 26 September at Beyond Fest in Los Angeles, marking Oberst's first foray into filmmaking and offering fans a new creative link between the two musicians.

The short follows a pianist attempting to master Bach's intricate "Invention 13" while facing "strange obstacles," with Oberst describing music as "an exorcism" that "sometimes… won't come out." It stars actors Emory Cohen and Olivia Howard, features an appearance from professional skater Nelly Morville, and includes a score composed by Bright Eyes bandmate Nathaniel Walcott. Oberst and Bridgers previously collaborated as Better Oblivion Community Center, releasing a self-titled album in 2019, and reunited on stage in 2024; Oberst also featured in the credits of Bridgers' acclaimed 2025 album Lost Weekend.
