Polygon has published a hands-on preview of Final Fantasy 7 Revelation, the third and final instalment in Square Enix's FF7 remake trilogy, following a 45-minute demo at Gamescom 2026. The game's central innovation is a fully seamless open world accessed via the airship Highwind, which allows players to fly anywhere on the map, parachute down and explore without loading screens, reusing every environment from Rebirth rendered at the same fidelity. This design choice marks a notable departure from typical sequels, which rarely carry over entire game worlds wholesale, and the preview suggests it lends the game a strong sense of place.

The demo picked up several hours into the story, at the start of chapter four, with the party pursuing giant creatures called Weapons that have appeared around the planet, and briefly visiting the new region of Wutai. The preview also highlighted a new combat feature, the Function-Integrated Tactical Suitwear (FITS) system, letting players switch between four character classes—Warrior, Knight, Black Mage and Summoner—on the fly, building on the action-and-menu combat established in the previous two games. The reviewer described the game's scale and presentation as exceptionally impressive, while cautioning that a short demo cannot fully capture an open-world game's scope.

Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is the closing chapter of Square Enix's three-part remake of the classic 1997 role-playing game Final Fantasy 7, following on from Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth. The trilogy retells the original story of a ragtag group fighting to stop a shadowy corporation and a returning villain from threatening the planet, but expands it into three full-length games with modern graphics and combat. Coverage of Revelation so far comes from press previews based on short hands-on demos at industry events, rather than the finished game.

The gaming press outlet Polygon is among several outlets that regularly cover major game releases through early previews, playing unfinished builds ahead of launch to give readers a sense of what to expect. These previews typically focus on new features and design choices rather than final verdicts, since the games themselves are not yet complete or widely available to play.

This matters because the FF7 remake trilogy is one of the most closely watched projects in gaming, given the original game's status as a landmark title and the scale of resources Square Enix has invested in reimagining it. Each instalment's technical and creative choices, such as how it handles its game world and combat systems, are closely scrutinised by fans and critics as signs of how the story will be brought to its conclusion.
