A Green Party councillor in Birmingham has appeared in court charged with assaulting five people, including three police officers, following an alleged incident in Edgbaston in August 2026. The case is significant because the defendant, Siobhan Harper-Nunes, was a prominent figure in the local Green Party, having previously stood as its West Midlands mayoral candidate, and has since been suspended from the party as a result of the charges, now sitting as an independent on Birmingham City Council.

Harper-Nunes, 66, elected as councillor for the Ladywood ward earlier this year, was arrested after police were called to reports of disorder on 6 August. She is accused of assaulting a member of the public, three police officers and a member of police staff. At Birmingham Magistrates' Court she spoke only to confirm her name and address, and District Judge Michelle Smith adjourned proceedings until 17 September so CCTV evidence could be reviewed, releasing her on unconditional bail in the meantime.
