AI-generated "microdramas" are increasingly displacing human cast and crew in the US vertical drama industry, which had become a valuable source of work for Hollywood professionals after the 2023 strikes. Platforms such as DramaBox, DramaWave and FlareFlow are adopting synthetic actors and AI-generated settings alongside dedicated AI-only apps like My Muse and Inkitt Ironblood, driven largely by the improved quality of tools such as Seedance 2.0. Workers including actors, producers and crew say job opportunities have sharply declined in recent months, forcing many back into other employment.

AI-produced microdramas are significantly cheaper and quicker to make than live-action ones: full AI productions can cost $60,000-$100,000 versus $100,000-$300,000 for live-action, with some claiming costs as low as $1,000-$3,000, and completion in around two weeks rather than twelve. Staffing needs have also shrunk drastically, from roughly 50 workers on a live-action shoot to as few as five for an AI production. Talent manager Maddie Grove reported casting opportunities falling from 15-20 shows a day to around four since June, while actor Kylie Karson said weekly audition numbers dropped from 5-15 last year to about two now.
