Robert Altman's 1971 revisionist Western "McCabe & Mrs. Miller," widely regarded as one of the finest films in the genre, is now streaming for free in the United States on Tubi. The film is notable for subverting traditional Western conventions, and its renewed availability has drawn attention partly because of director Quentin Tarantino's well-documented mixed feelings about it, despite his own reputation for reworking Western tropes in films such as "Django Unchained" and "Inglourious Basterds."

Tarantino, speaking on the Pure Cinema Podcast, singled out the film's opening reel as "the worst-mixed reel in the history of Hollywood cinema," criticising its sound quality as unusually poor even by the standards of the era. He said he had abandoned the film twice after watching it on VHS, only warming to it once he saw a 35mm print, after which his opinion of the movie, starring Warren Beatty and Julie Christie, changed considerably. Beatty, who starred in the picture, was reportedly believed by Tarantino to have effectively directed himself in it.
