Netflix has revealed details of "Below," a six-episode thriller set in a fictional, dying Newfoundland fishing village called Snooks Arm, premiering on 8 October. Created by Canadian showrunner Jesse McKeown, known for his work on The Umbrella Academy and Letterkenny, the series follows Josh Hartnett's character Calvin Penney, whose family has lived in the declining town for 40 years, as an ordinary ice-harvesting trip uncovers something sinister lurking beneath the water's surface. McKeown describes the show as "Jaws set in rural Newfoundland," blending horror with a grounded portrait of a community already under threat from economic and environmental decline.

The series draws heavily on real Newfoundland history, including the government-led resettlement programmes that began in the 1960s, which forced rural communities to relocate—sometimes floating entire houses across the water—and the 1990s cod fishing moratorium that devastated the region's economy. McKeown says he wanted to open the show by acknowledging this difficult, occasionally coercive history, which still shapes decisions facing remote communities today. He also cites John Carpenter and H.P. Lovecraft as key stylistic influences on the series' tone and horror elements.
