The Legend of Patricia Summersett’s ‘Zelda’: Voice Actress Behind Nintendo’s Iconic Princess on Franchise’s 40th Anniversary, Upcoming Live-Action Movie

Variety · 1 hour ago

Patricia Summersett, the voice actress behind Princess Zelda in English-language dubs of Nintendo's games since 2017's "Breath of the Wild", has spoken to Variety about creating the character's voice and reflected on the franchise's 40th anniversary this year. Notably, she revealed she developed the now-iconic voice without knowing at the time that she was auditioning for Zelda, as the role was kept secret during casting, shaping the character's distinctive sound through instinct rather than deliberate design.

Summersett based her performance on script specifications alone, pitching her naturally lower voice higher and giving it a "classic English" quality to suit the fantasy setting. Since her debut in the role, she has also voiced Zelda in "Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity", "Tears of the Kingdom" and "Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment", though she could not confirm involvement in the forthcoming "Ocarina of Time" remake, due in November, or the live-action "Zelda" film scheduled for April 2027. She described playing the princess as one of the most physically relaxing roles of her career and expressed pride at having been part of a quarter-century of the franchise's 40-year history.
