A planning dispute has broken out in Brighton after a 31ft fake shark, suspended from a gallows-style structure at a crazy golf course, was installed without planning permission and is now facing objections from residents who say it glorifies the killing of a species vital to marine ecosystems. Jumble Rumble Adventure Golf put up the fibreglass shark on Brighton seafront last August and has since applied retrospectively for planning permission, but the outcome is uncertain given the strength of local opposition.

One resident's formal objection, lodged on 29 August 2026, argued the display was "very offensive", calling it an inappropriate "symbol of slaughter and destruction" for a children's play area given ongoing efforts to rewild the seas. Other critics raised concerns on social media, including one complaint about its suitability given the city's vegetarian population, though some residents dismissed the row as "a fuss over nothing". A heritage assessment found the shark visible from the beach and nearby landmarks but concluded it fits the seafront's long recreational history without harming the conservation area, and it also passed biodiversity checks. Brighton & Hove City Council has yet to make a final decision on the application.
