Trainee doctor Yasin Khan, 23, has been jailed for four and a half years after admitting causing the death of cyclist Ben Steward by dangerous driving, despite the victim's sister publicly pleading with the court to show him mercy. Khan, who was studying medicine at the University of East Anglia, was driving at up to 59mph in a 30mph zone on the A140 outer ring road in Norwich when he struck 38-year-old father-of-two Mr Steward in February 2023. Judge Katharine Moore ruled that the offence was too serious for anything other than immediate custody, despite Khan's remorse and guilty plea.

Norwich Crown Court heard Mr Steward, who appeared intoxicated and was wearing dark clothing, had ridden his unlit bicycle through a red light when Khan's VW Golf hit him as he crossed the junction with the lights in his favour. Khan, of Newcastle, has since abandoned his medical studies and now works as a barber. Alongside the prison term, he was banned from driving for seven years and must take an extended re-test. Mr Steward's sister, Charly Steward, told the court her brother was "the kindest, sweetest man" and asked for leniency, saying prison would not bring him back, but the judge said the high speed and the victim's vulnerability as a cyclist were aggravating factors that warranted custody.
