Virtual reality pioneer Polyarc ends operations after 12 years
Polyarc, the Seattle-based studio behind the virtual reality games Moss and Moss: Book II, has closed after nearly 12 years, according to a post on the company's LinkedIn page. At least 29 staff members are now seeking new employment, and the closure marks the end of one of the earliest and most acclaimed studios working in the VR space. The Moss series was praised for blending traditional action-adventure gameplay with a diorama-style camera system, following mouse protagonist Quill, and became a defining title for platforms including PlayStation VR and Oculus Quest.
Polyarc's catalogue also included Moss: Book II, released across PSVR, Quest, SteamVR and Pico, and Glassbreakers, a rare multiplayer strategy title for the Apple Vision Pro. In May 2026 the studio attempted to broaden its audience with Moss: The Forgotten Relic, a non-VR compilation reimagining the series for players without a headset, though its commercial performance is unclear. The studio's demise comes amid a broader contraction in VR funding, following Meta's shift away from metaverse investment towards AI at the start of the year, which included closing several of its own VR studios. Despite Polyarc's closure, all of its games remain available for purchase.
