The Martian, the 2015 sci-fi film starring Matt Damon and directed by Ridley Scott, is due to leave Prime Video in 19 days, prompting the streamer to flag its imminent removal to subscribers. Interest in the film has picked up again thanks to the success of Project Hail Mary, Ryan Gosling's 2026 space adventure, also based on a novel by Andy Weir, which has drawn comparisons to Scott's earlier adaptation and is being tipped for awards attention.

The Martian was adapted from Weir's 2011 novel and grossed $653 million worldwide ($228 million domestic, $425 million international) on release, a haul comparable to Project Hail Mary's near-$700 million take. Since making The Martian, Scott has largely worked outside the sci-fi genre, with Alien: Covenant, Gladiator II and Napoleon, before returning to the genre with The Dog Stars, an adaptation starring Jacob Elordi that has met a poor critical and commercial reception. The Martian remains available on Prime Video for 19 more days before it is removed.
