LG has publicly denied claims from a widely circulated report that its smart TVs continuously record users' conversations, saying the accusations stem from "misconceptions" about how the devices actually work. The response follows a 135-minute investigation by Gamers Nexus, conducted with Level1 Techs and independent cybersecurity researchers, which alleged that LG TVs could capture audio and collect sensitive data such as IP addresses, locations and nearby WiFi network details even while asleep, unplugged from the network, or not directly connected. Given how widely smart TVs are used, the dispute matters for consumer trust in connected home devices and how transparent manufacturers are about data collection.

In its detailed statement, LG said speech-to-text processing only begins when a user activates voice interaction via a wake-word or the remote's voice button, and that voice data isn't stored for later upload once a TV is offline. It also clarified that features such as Automatic Content Recognition, voice recognition and interest-based advertising are optional and switched off by default. On the report's separate concern about data-collection risks enabling security exploits, LG acknowledged that "no connected product is ever completely immune from security vulnerabilities," pledging ongoing monitoring and testing, while maintaining that user privacy remains a "fundamental principle" of its products.
