Britain is undertaking a massive overhaul of its electricity grid, with five times more infrastructure being built by 2030 than in the previous three decades combined, to connect growing wind and solar capacity and bolster energy security. The push follows global shocks, including Russia's invasion of Ukraine and the Iran war, which exposed the UK's vulnerability to volatile fossil fuel prices, and it aims to let homegrown renewables shield households from future price spikes. Without sufficient grid capacity, experts warn Britain will remain more reliant on fossil fuels, facing higher emissions and continued exposure to price shocks.
The scheme requires over 4,000 miles of new power lines by 2041, including new pylons, subsea cables and converter stations, with Neso estimating £64bn needed by 2030 and £89bn beyond that, totalling more than £150bn largely funded through household bill surcharges. The upgrade is the biggest since the 1950s and 1960s, and is especially urgent in Scotland, where windfarm capacity has grown from 5.7GW to 15GW in a decade but often cannot be transmitted south into England due to grid bottlenecks. The National Audit Office has warned that dozens of projects risk delay, while some rural communities have protested against the scale of construction, describing it as an "energy invasion".
