Boris Johnson escaped unharmed after the private train carrying him from Kyiv towards Poland was given an evacuation warning when a nearby Russian drone struck a train just behind it. The former British prime minister had been attending the Yalta European Strategy security conference in Kyiv, where Western officials discussed possible peace negotiations with Russia, when the alert was issued at around 5am. The strike, which came close to the Polish border, highlights the growing risk to rail links used by Western officials and diplomats travelling to and from Ukraine, and raises concerns about Russian strikes edging closer to NATO territory.

Former Swedish prime minister Carl Bildt, also travelling with Johnson, said the train hit was the one immediately following theirs at the border crossing, and that it was evacuated with no injuries reported. A separate attack struck another Kyiv-Warsaw train carrying 206 people, including a senior adviser to German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and other European security officials, though the locomotive alone was damaged and no one was hurt. Ukraine's foreign minister said a drone also hit the Yahodyn-Dorohusk crossing, a key EU border link, amid a wider Russian bombardment involving hundreds of drones overnight, with German MP Robin Wagener describing the attacks as a deliberate escalation aimed at intimidating Ukraine's Western backers.
