Kerr, 28, overtook American Yared Nuguse on the back straight before pulling clear to win in three minutes 29.35 seconds. He did not qualify for the new event by right but was given an exceptional invitation by World Athletics alongside rival Jakob Ingebrigtsen, whose anticipated showdown with Kerr failed to materialise after the Norwegian withdrew following his 5,000m win. World Athletics president Lord Coe hopes the three-day Budapest event, featuring reigning champions and top-ranked athletes, can help shape the sport's future. It comes a year after a calf injury ended Kerr's world title defence in Tokyo, with two more World Championships to come before the next Olympics.
