Diablo 5 Has A Surprising Connection To Dragon Age
Developing story first seen 2 hours ago
Diablo 5's narrative director has been confirmed as Jennifer Brandes Hepler, a former BioWare writer best known for her work on the first three Dragon Age games, Blizzard revealed at BlizzCon 2026. The appointment matters for role-playing game fans because it suggests Diablo 5 will lean further into character-driven storytelling than previous entries in the action RPG series, blending traditional RPG narrative techniques with Blizzard's loot-driven combat format.
Hepler helped shape the dwarven storylines and several beloved characters across Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age 2 and Dragon Age: Inquisition, before leaving BioWare in 2013 following a period of intense online harassment tied to Dragon Age 2's mixed reception. She joined Blizzard's Diablo 5 team in 2025, and told Polygon that the game's "caravan" system, where players interact with companion characters who have distinct personalities, draws on her experience with traditional RPGs, though followers won't have levelling or equipment options like Dragon Age's did. Diablo 5, which is set in a world where Diablo has already conquered the western continent, is due for release in spring 2029; no new Dragon Age game has been announced, as BioWare is currently focused on the next Mass Effect.

The tension between Diablo and Dragon Age lies in their approach to storytelling. Diablo has traditionally been an action role-playing game built around fast combat and item collecting, with plot delivered in short bursts rather than deep character work. Dragon Age, by contrast, built its reputation on rich party members, branching dialogue and personal storylines, largely thanks to writers at BioWare, the studio behind it.
Jennifer Brandes Hepler is one of those former BioWare writers, having worked on the first three Dragon Age games and contributed to some of its most memorable characters and storylines. She left BioWare in 2013 after facing significant online abuse connected to the reception of Dragon Age 2, and has since worked elsewhere in the games industry before joining Blizzard's Diablo team in 2025.
Diablo 5 is the next entry in Blizzard's long-running action RPG series, expected in 2029, while Dragon Age's future is currently uncertain, with BioWare focused on a new Mass Effect game instead. Hepler's move brings a writer associated with one series' narrative style into the development of the other, which is why her role has drawn attention from fans of both franchises.
