John Carpenter, the director behind horror classics such as Halloween and The Thing, has said he would be happy to direct a music video for Metallica if the band asked him to. The 78-year-old filmmaker made the comments in an interview with Metal Hammer, revealing himself to be a long-standing fan of the heavy metal band, particularly their 1991 self-titled album.

Carpenter explained that his children introduced him to Metallica through the hit single Enter Sandman, and that he has loved the album, often referred to as The Black Album, ever since, despite never having seen the band perform live. He also reflected more broadly on the enduring power of rock music and music as an art form, calling it "probably the greatest thing that humanity ever created" for its ability to transcend language and borders. Carpenter, known for films including The Fog, Christine and Escape From New York, is also an accomplished composer who has scored 15 of his 18 feature films and has released albums with his son Cody Carpenter and godson Daniel Davies since 2015.
