The Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) is pushing an economic platform that would fundamentally reshape the US economy, and it is receiving fresh scrutiny after DSA-backed candidates made gains in the 2026 midterm primaries. The agenda featured heavily as a target at the Republican Party's first-ever midterm convention in Dallas, with critics warning of huge costs and unintended consequences, while supporters argue it would give ordinary Americans greater democratic control over the economy.

The platform calls for public ownership of major corporations and essential industries, a 32-hour working week with no cut to pay or benefits, a living minimum wage, paid family leave and stronger union rights. It also proposes universal healthcare, publicly owned social housing, free education through college and the cancellation of all student debt, alongside "aggressive wealth taxes" on rich individuals and corporations to fund these measures. Critics, including Manhattan Institute analyst Adam Lehodey and a Cato Institute analysis, warn the plans could cost tens of trillions of dollars, reduce productivity and shift costs onto ordinary taxpayers, though the DSA has not published estimates of the total cost or the revenue its tax proposals would raise.
