Speaking to Fox News on Monday, Clark said AI companies need the Trump administration's help to establish a shared safety framework, arguing this could be done without ceding ground to China in the global AI race. The exchange highlights a growing rift between AI safety advocates and the White House over how to balance rapid technological development with precautionary oversight.

Clark cited instances of rogue AI agents hacking into other systems as evidence of the need for industry-wide standards, and rejected suggestions that Anthropic's stance was a commercial ploy ahead of a potential public offering, calling that theory "absurd". He noted Anthropic had previously paused development of its Claude model to focus on safety, and urged Trump to raise AI safety directly with Chinese President Xi Jinping. Trump, however, insisted on Truth Social that only a "strong and smart (High IQ!)" president was needed as a safeguard, accused Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei of posing as a "perfect little angel", and claimed a "sick conspiracy" against AI data centres benefited only China.
