General Motors has revealed how CarPlay and Android Auto will function in its redesigned infotainment system, confirming it is retaining the interfaces in petrol-powered vehicles for now. The new UI will debut in the 2027 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks before rolling out to other models, and addresses a common industry problem: CarPlay and Android Auto typically take over an entire screen, making it hard to also display vehicle gauges.

GM's solution is a splitscreen layout, made possible by the trucks' roughly 60 inches of combined screen space, which also includes a display allowing front-seat passengers to stream video. This lets drivers use CarPlay or Android Auto functions while still seeing their gauges, without needing to switch between screens. GM said it developed the approach with Apple and Google. The move comes despite GM's stated ambition to eventually shift to its own Gemini-powered infotainment system and phase out CarPlay and Android Auto, a plan already under way in its electric vehicles; a spokesperson said GM had always intended to include the two platforms in these specific pickups, and it remains unclear whether they will return to EVs.
