Google has scheduled an "Opening Night" event in New York City on 5 October to showcase its first wave of Googlebooks, a new line of Android-based, AI-focused laptops. The event follows Monday's announcement that pre-orders will open on 21 September, meaning Google will begin taking orders for the devices before formally unveiling them in detail—an unusual sequence that suggests fuller specifications may only emerge closer to, or during, the pre-order window. The launch appears timed to get the laptops onto shelves ahead of the holiday shopping season.

Googlebooks run a version of ChromeOS built on Android, giving them tight integration with Android phones, and are being manufactured by longstanding Google partners Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP and Lenovo. Distinctive features include a "glowbar" light on the lid, a "Magic Pointer" tool that surfaces contextual actions when hovering over on-screen items (activated by wiggling the cursor), and a custom widget generator borrowed from Android 17. Google says the event will include interactive showcases and debut "the first laptop designed for Gemini Intelligence," its AI system.
