Nyuon, who was born in an Ethiopian refugee camp and moved to Australia at 18, argued the country has "never been a monoculture", citing Indigenous linguistic diversity and post-war immigration, and objected to the term "Anglo-Celtic" as implying a threatened white culture that does not exist. She said growing calls for Australia to embrace a "monoculture" were a key reason for her departure. Her decision follows a workplace dispute in which she resigned from Victoria University's Sir Zelman Cowen Centre over an $800,000 WorkSafe Victoria diversity project, alleging she was "victimised" and used as "corporate blackface", claims she detailed in online posts titled "The Goodbye Chronicles".
