A bomb squad and army explosives specialists have been deployed to a residential street in High Green, a suburb of Sheffield, after "substances" were found concealed at a property, prompting the evacuation of nearby homes. A 35-year-old woman, Rachel Hale, has been charged under Section 4 of the Explosive Substances Act 1883 and remanded in custody, with police stressing the ongoing operation is a precautionary safety measure rather than a public threat.

Police first attended the address on Mapplebeck Road on Friday, but the discovery of additional items in a concealed area on Tuesday triggered the wider evacuation and a 100-metre cordon. The Army's Explosive Ordnance Team, including a bomb disposal robot, remains at the scene, several surrounding roads are closed, a nearby school has shut and displaced residents have been sent to a rest centre. Hale is due to appear at Sheffield Crown Court on 22 September, while police say the evacuation will stay in place until specialists confirm it is safe to lift.
