The family of Jorge Ortega, an Elizabeth Line worker killed by a single punch from a fellow passenger, have paid tribute to him following court proceedings, saying he should be remembered "for the life he lived, not for the way he was taken from us." Ortega, 61, intervened alongside colleagues to calm Ayodele Jamgbadi, 30, who had become angry after missing his train at Ilford Station in December 2024; Jamgbadi struck him with a single punch, causing Ortega to fall and hit his head on the platform, and he died two days later from a severe brain injury.

Jamgbadi was initially charged with causing grievous bodily harm, a charge later upgraded to murder after Ortega's death. He was found unfit to stand trial due to significant mental health issues, and a Trial of Facts at Inner London Crown Court determined he had thrown the fatal blow; he will now be detained in a psychiatric hospital rather than face a criminal conviction. Ortega's family described him as a devoted husband of 38 years, father and grandfather-of-five, and a talented artist whose work remains displayed in their homes.
