A convicted offender in Ohio broke free of his handcuffs and assaulted a court bailiff moments after being sentenced to a year in prison, before attempting to flee the courthouse. Timothy Reaggle, 20, had just been sentenced by Judge Scott Washam in Lisbon, Ohio, on a series of violent charges when he slipped his restraints while being escorted to a holding cell, punching bailiff Keith Thorn in the throat and knocking him to the ground. The incident, captured on video, escalated into a chaotic pursuit through the courthouse, raising fresh questions about custody procedures for violent offenders immediately after sentencing.

Reaggle also knocked down a second bailiff, Steve Boyd, as he sprinted for the exit, and resisted attempts by officers to tackle him on a stairwell before deputy sheriff Nick Rusyn used a taser to subdue him near the courthouse's front barriers. Both bailiffs were injured, with Thorn left bleeding from the head and requiring hospital treatment, and both men reportedly suffering broken bones and recovering at home. Sheriff Brian McLaughlin said additional charges, including felony assault on police officers, felony escape and resisting arrest, are expected, while praising his staff's response; a witness described it as unlike anything seen in 35 years practising law.
