Rail executives told the Scottish Parliament's transport committee that reports of assaults on women have increased on both the Caledonian Sleeper and the wider ScotRail network, highlighting concerns about passenger safety on Scotland's railways. Hannah Ross, chief executive of Scottish Rail Holdings, which runs the Caledonian Sleeper, described a "handful of issues of anti-social behaviour and violence against women and girls", while cautioning that she could not say whether this reflected a genuine rise in incidents or simply increased reporting.

ScotRail managing director Joanne Maguire also confirmed a rise in reported assaults across its services, though she suggested this was partly proportionate to rising passenger numbers and stressed that both staff and travellers are encouraged to report incidents. Since ScotRail's public ownership began in 2022, the company has invested in additional CCTV and expanded body-worn cameras from 300 to 1,000 staff members. Ms Ross said similar efforts to extend body-worn camera use were under way on the Caledonian Sleeper, which was nationalised in 2023, though she noted its CCTV currently only covers public areas of the train.
