Ohio mother pleads not guilty to sexual abuse amid pregnancy questions

Daily Mail · 45 minutes ago

Elizabeth Siders, the mother found with 16 children in a squalid Ohio home, has pleaded not guilty to child sexual abuse charges after appearing in court visibly cradling a pregnant-looking stomach. Her lawyer declined to confirm whether she is pregnant again, notable given she has already given birth to 18 children, including conjoined twins who died at birth, since marrying husband Gary Jr. at the age of 15. The case has drawn wide attention after the discovery of the family's decrepit living conditions, with children found sharing a 12-by-12 room, and now carries additional weight given serious sexual abuse allegations against both parents.

Siders, 34, pleaded not guilty at Vinton County Common Pleas Court to two counts of sexual battery and two of unlawful sexual conduct with a minor, relating to alleged abuse of a young relative between January and September 2022. Her bond was increased by $250,000 to $500,000, while husband Gary Jr., who also pleaded not guilty, faces a $550,000 bond. Both have separately denied 19 counts of child endangerment concerning their own children, and Siders is due a competency evaluation; her father-in-law was ruled incompetent to stand trial, while evaluations for Gary Jr. and his mother are pending. Prosecutors said the case began as a family child sex abuse investigation prompted by concerned Dollar General clerks, before DNA search warrants led to the discovery of the family's home conditions.
