Veteran South African sports broadcaster Owen Ndlovu was abducted while collecting his wife from a church near Johannesburg and found dead the following morning. His killing has prompted tributes and renewed concern about the country’s persistent violent crime, including hijackings and armed robberies.

Police are searching for three suspects after Ndlovu, 54, was reportedly forced into his Ford Raptor, which was later found abandoned. Residents discovered his body beside a road with apparent gunshot wounds; a post-mortem will confirm the cause of death. Ndlovu was a former SABC presenter and producer, radio football commentator and advocate for musicians’ rights. National figures for April to June 2026 recorded more than 5,000 murders and nearly 4,000 carjackings.
