Hennepin County Attorney Mary Moriarty has faced significant criticism after financial records revealed she spent over £500,000 in taxpayer funds on personal security services since November 2023. Local social media users have dubbed her "Bloody Mary" following reports that numerous accused criminals, including alleged murderers and serial rapists, have been released through plea deals under her tenure. The spending disclosure has intensified scrutiny of her prosecutorial decisions, particularly after a high-profile case involving a man charged with multiple kidnappings and rapes who was released twice before federal prosecutors took over.

The security costs paid to private firm Relative Intel escalated substantially over time, rising from £10,950 in 2023 to £183,875 in 2025, with £214,573 spent in 2026 through August alone. Moriarty's office and Hennepin County have confirmed the security agreement as legitimate county business. However, political opponents, including attorney Chris Madel, have accused her of hypocrisy for spending such funds on personal protection whilst publicly urging Minneapolis residents not to fear crime. Moriarty has defended her prosecutorial record, characterising federal action in one case as political and suggesting it was designed to harm the Somali community.
