Britain's Electoral Commission is conducting a Government-commissioned review of political spending limits following Reform UK's receipt of a record £72 million in donations from crypto-billionaires Ben Delo and Christopher Harborne. The Electoral Commission chief executive stated the review will examine whether current spending rules are fit for purpose, with particular focus on ensuring elections are contested on a level playing field. The unprecedented donations have triggered fresh scrutiny of political funding frameworks in the UK.

Under existing restrictions, political parties can spend up to £34 million in the year before a general election. Labour ministers Angela Rayner and Louise Haigh have written to the Electoral Commission expressing the view that current spending limits are too high and should be reduced. Reform leader Nigel Farage has accused the Government of attempting to change rules to disadvantage his party, whilst Reform maintains the donations comply with current rules and planned restrictions on overseas donor contributions. The Electoral Commission will present its recommendations in July 2027.
