The Lucas Museum of Narrative Art opened in Los Angeles with a star-studded gala attended by figures from film, television, music, politics and business. Founded by George Lucas and Mellody Hobson, the museum aims to recognise illustrators and explore storytelling through visual art, while marking the completion of a project that took 20 years to realise.

The $1.5 billion museum in Exposition Park was entirely funded by Lucas and Hobson and contains 1,200 works from Lucas’s 30,000-piece collection. Designed by Ma Yansong of MAD Architects, the five-storey, 300,000-square-foot building includes 35 galleries across a 13-acre campus; its opening was co-chaired by figures including Guillermo del Toro, Greta Gerwig, Steven Spielberg and Pharrell Williams.
