Residents of Princes Street in Mansfield say the growing number of houses in multiple occupation (HMOs) is damaging their once close-knit community. They blame landlords’ conversions for parking shortages, overflowing bins and a constant turnover of unfamiliar tenants, although they stress that the tenants themselves are generally quiet and not at fault.

Residents estimate that at least 15 of the road’s 42 properties are now HMOs or divided into flats, with further applications pending. Mansfield District Council approved expanding one HMO from six bedrooms to accommodate ten people, while another proposal seeks to convert a property into a six-person HMO; locals argue the conversions are financially attractive because they can generate substantially more rental income than conventional family lets.
