US and Chinese officials have discussed creating a notification system for artificial-intelligence incidents that could affect national security. The proposal was raised by US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent after “successful” talks with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng, ahead of a planned Trump–Xi summit, and reflects concerns about the risks of rapid AI development.

The discussions also covered possible tariff reductions and the future of a trade-war truce due to expire on 10 November. The US and China are competing for leadership in AI, while Washington faces calls for stricter safeguards; President Trump has argued that the US must maintain its technological advantage.
