The film was a remake of a 1974 Italian political drama that originally starred Giancarlo Giannini and Mariangela Melato, and Ritchie's version featured his then-wife Madonna in the lead role. Ritchie's remake received five Razzie Awards, including Worst Actress for Madonna and Worst Screen Couple.
