Lucasfilm's new creative leader Dave Filoni has announced that the iconic Star Wars opening crawl will henceforth be reserved exclusively for "Saga-type films" rather than appearing before all theatrical releases. This represents a significant reversal of former president Kathleen Kennedy's 2023 pledge that the crawl would return for the franchise's theatrical slate. The policy shift underscores a broader recalibration of how Star Wars distinguishes its various film projects.

The change is already in effect: *The Mandalorian and Grogu*, which premiered in May 2026, opened with static explanatory text instead of the traditional crawl, whilst *Ahsoka* features a red, vertically-oriented version rather than the classic yellow diagonal format. This approach has precedent—*Rogue One* and *Solo* similarly omitted the traditional crawl, with only the nine Skywalker Saga films featuring it. Director Jon Favreau has defended the decision, arguing that restricting the crawl's use preserves its impact and resonance with audiences.
