Armored Saint bassist Joey Vera says the band has often been misunderstood because it never truly belonged to one musical scene. Although links to Metallica associated them with thrash metal and their Los Angeles origins led to comparisons with hair bands, Vera says the group has always pursued its own blend of blues rock, hard rock and heavy metal.

Vera also praised singer John Bush as a uniquely recognisable vocalist whose style reflects his influences, including Bon Scott, Ronnie James Dio and Rob Halford. He said that, since around 2010, he has written more consciously for Bush’s voice, while Bush has adopted lifestyle changes to protect his vocal instrument and extend his career; Vera believes he now sounds better than ever.
