Wilber Rafael Garces Perez, a 28-year-old Venezuelan DoorDash driver, was shot by ICE agents in Austin, Texas whilst making a delivery on Sunday. He was subsequently moved to an ICE detention centre in Pearsall despite still having a bullet lodged near his spine that doctors were unable to remove. The case has drawn scrutiny because Perez had entered the US legally in 2024 under the CBP One asylum programme and holds a valid work permit, yet ICE pressed for his rapid discharge from hospital to be transferred into custody.

The shooting occurred around 12:45pm when ICE agents in an unmarked vehicle pulled Perez over. According to his account, officers did not signal him to stop and then sideswiped his car twice. When asked why he was being stopped, he requested to park his vehicle to arrange a pickup, but was refused. Three gunshots were fired whilst his vehicle was rolling, though the precise circumstances remain unclear. Perez received no pain medication whilst hospitalised and was forced to sleep on the floor before being transferred into detention. Austin's mayor has called for local police involvement in the investigation, as the Department of Homeland Security has released minimal details about the incident.
