The United States will establish two new military bases in Greenland under an agreement to be signed at the UN General Assembly between the US, Denmark, and Greenlandic leaders. The bases will be located at Narsarsuaq in southern Greenland, a former Cold War installation, and Mestersvig on the east coast, currently used by the Danish Sirius Dog Sled Patrol. Greenland will remain Danish territory under the agreement, with NATO rather than solely the US and Denmark overseeing Arctic security. The pact follows Trump's months-long pressure campaign, which triggered a diplomatic crisis within NATO, despite polling showing an overwhelming majority of Greenlanders rejected the proposal. During the Cold War, the US maintained 17 military installations and over 10,000 personnel in Greenland; today only Pituffik Space Base operates there with approximately 150 US military personnel.
