Prime Minister Andy Burnham has reaffirmed his intention to revive a proposed agreement transferring sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, ahead of talks with US President Donald Trump. The plan has been suspended since April following opposition from Washington, with the future of the Diego Garcia military base at the centre of the dispute.

Under the proposal, Mauritius would gain sovereignty while the UK and US retained access to Diego Garcia through a 99-year lease, potentially extendable. Supporters argue the arrangement would protect the strategically important base, while opponents question its security implications and estimated cost, which could reach £35 billion over a century; Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch criticised the Government for prioritising the deal.
