MIT overtakes Princeton in latest US university rankings
Princeton University has fallen to second place in the latest US News & World Report ranking of America’s national universities, ending its 15-year run at the top. Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) took first place, highlighting the continuing influence of rankings on perceptions of academic prestige and students’ college choices.
Both institutions have highly selective admissions, with Princeton accepting about 4% of applicants and enrolling students with average GPAs of roughly 3.95–3.96. MIT has comparable admissions standards and tuition, while Princeton president Christopher L. Eisgruber has criticised the rankings for encouraging an unhealthy fixation and potentially discouraging universities from admitting talented, low-income students who may need additional support.
