Sheffield City Council has secured £4 million to develop flood defences along the Rivers Sheaf and Porter, aiming to protect hundreds of homes, businesses and key infrastructure. The scheme matters because climate change is expected to increase the city’s flood risk over time.

The planned study covers the Sheaf from Lady’s Bridge to Millhouses and parts of Dore, plus the Porter from Sheffield railway station to Bingham Park and Whiteley Woods. The funding includes £1.2 million authorised by the council, made up of an Environment Agency grant and £2.8 million from the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority; the full project is expected to cost tens of millions.
