PS5 Pro update sets enhanced PSSR as default for compatible games

Engadget · 51 minutes ago

Sony’s latest PS5 system update makes its enhanced PSSR image-quality setting the default on PS5 Pro consoles. This means compatible games built around the original PSSR upscaler can automatically use the newer version, potentially improving image clarity and stability without requiring owners to find and enable an obscure setting. However, the change only affects games that already support PSSR.

Sony introduced the enhanced version in March, describing improvements to fine-detail reconstruction, motion stability, flickering and visual artefacts. PSSR allows games to render at lower resolutions before upscaling, helping developers improve graphics without the full performance cost of native high-resolution rendering. Owners can disable the override in the console’s video-output settings if they notice unwanted effects, while the update also adds a speaker indicator for voice chat and new Community Activity widgets to the Welcome Hub.

  • Enhanced PSSR is now enabled by default on compatible PS5 Pro games.
  • Games without existing PSSR support are unaffected.
  • The update also adds voice-chat indicators and Welcome Hub widgets.
